The Interview:
As noted, Memphis Blast quarterback Cameron Mayfield signed a contract with Ritterhude. After reading the article, there was a groundswell of readers wanting to know more about the former Memphis Blast quarterback. Gridiron Media spoke to Mayfield about his upbringing, skills, and career goals.
Far from the bright lights of Beale Street, there is another side to Memphis. Statistically, Memphis is one of the most dangerous cities in the United States to live in. Per 1,000 residents, the national number of violent crimes is 3.8. In Memphis, that number is 16.69. Meaning, you are four times as likely to be a victim of a horrendous crime there. Mayfield knows these streets. For better and worse, they’ve surrounded him.
TB: What did growing up in North Memphis entail?
CM: Growing up in Memphis could be equated to living in the jungle: only the strong survive. I lost my friend while I was in college. His name was Deandre Mickens (murdered February 2014, in his neighborhood). Every time I strap on that helmet and shoulder pads, I think of him. When he was murdered, my world changed. My eyes were opened to the fact that football was the only way out of North Memphis.
TB: When did you know you wanted to pursue football?
CM: At 5yrs old, I found the love & passion for the game. I felt like I can make a career out of it. This is the time to use my talent to enrich my life.
TB: What was your GDFL experience like?
CM: My GDFL experience was excellent. I started playing for the Blast when I was 21, straight out of college. The organization welcomed me with open arms. The Blast became less like teammates, but more like a family. (GDFL CEO) Charles Thompson has been a mentor to me, for which I am eternally grateful. No matter where football takes me, the GDFL will always be close.
TB: What excites you most about playing overseas?
CM: I’m mostly excited about going to a different country and showing off my talents. The Badgers have treated me respectfully. The coaches are in constant contact with me, informing me about the town and the atmosphere.
TB: What concerns you most?
CM: Nothing will affect me. I just hope I can understand the new language and culture. German is a difficult language to comprehend.
TB: How would you define your style as a QB?
CM: I consider myself an explosive, dual-threat quarterback. My mobility and arm strength can help me out of precarious situations. The play isn’t over, until that whistle blows.
TB: What is the one thing you’ll miss about Memphis and why?
CM: I would miss my family, but once the homesickness wears off, it will be fine. There will be a quick adjustment period.
TB: Where do you see yourself in 5 years?
CM: Hopefully playing in the NFL, but If that’s not my destiny, I have contingencies. Hopefully, I would be a police officer. Memphis needs more police that are familiar with the city. Somehow, I will make an impression on this world.
